How to move accountant or bookkeeper when you are neurodivergent.
Switching accountants or accountancy firms should be straightforward, whether it’s due to bad service, a lack of understanding, or simply finding a better fit. However when you are neurodivergent, the fear of conflict or difficult conversations can make the process feel daunting.
The good news? Changing accountants doesn’t have to be stressful. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you move from one firm to another smoothly.
1. Find the Right Accounting Firm for You
Not all accountants work the same way, so finding one that aligns with your needs is crucial. When researching potential firms, consider:
- Software Compatibility – They should work with the accounting software you already use, or one you’re planning to move to. More help with software can be found on our site here - Accounting Software & Apps.
- Communication Style – They should understand and respect how you prefer to communicate.
- Transparent Pricing – Ensure they provide a clear breakdown of fees before you commit.
- Defined Responsibilities – They should outline what they’ll handle and what you need to do.
- Accreditations & Insurance – Check that they have the appropriate licences and professional cover – for example, we’re licenced by the ICB.
2. Get a Proposal and Sign the Engagement Letter
Once you’ve chosen an accountant, request a proposal of fees and carefully review their letter of engagement. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
When you’re happy with the terms, sign the agreement to formally begin working with them.
3. Inform Your Current Accountant (No Awkward Conversations Required!)
When you are neurodivergent, having that call with someone can be really daunting and confronting — don’t worry, a simple email or letter is enough to inform your current accountant that you’re switching firms.
4. Your New Accountant Handles the Transfer
Your new accounting firm will send a Professional Clearance Letter to your previous accountant. This letter requests all necessary information for them to take over your accounts.
5. Moving Forward with Your New Accountant
Once your new accountant receives your information, you’ll have a handover meeting to discuss next steps. This usually includes:
- Gaining access to your accounting software and records.
- Checking that everything is in order.
- Moving to a new software system (if required).
- Getting access codes for tax submissions.
- Performing Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks.
